Bangalore City Inadequate Infrastructure

Frank Talk

census is expected to cross more than one crore mark by the year
2016. On the one side increasing population and on the other side
there is inadequate infrastructure such as improper roads,
insufficient water and electricity supply. The residents are facing
lot of problems.
The summer has already started and many localities in the
city are reeling under severe shortage of water supply. Due to
scanty rainfall, drying up of water bodies, rampant drilling of
borewells, the ground water level has also gone deeper. To meet the
growing water requirement of the city the authorities must act on a
war footing to rejuvenate the remaining water bodies through a
scientific approach. The wastage of water from supply lines must
be p
lugged effectively by proper monitoring and replacing the old
s
upply lines.
The citizens are suffering due to unscheduled severe power
cuts in the city. The conventional hydro electric power is
inadequate to meet the demands of the households, industries,
business establishments etc. The authorities must think of
harnessing power from renewable energy sources mainly solar
energy to meet the future power requirement of the city.
The city roads in many localities are in very bad conditions.

The city roads are getting choked with the ever increasing private
vehic
les due to inadequate, inefficient, unreliable public transport
system
. To encourage people to utilize public transport system, the
authorities must take prompt action to make it efficient and
relia
ble. The roads must be well maintained devoid of innumerable
potholes as at present, which can be seen even on the important
main roads in many localiti
es. The traffic congestion can be eased
to certain extent if different timing
s are fixed for Schools,
Colleges, Government and Private offices, Shopping and Business
establishments.

Light and Lighting Fixtures

For more :  www.bangalore5.com

The intention of this brief note is to make you aware of the basic principles of lighting and also to enable you to make a selection of fixtures, which are long lasting and trouble free. Armed with this you can intelligently speak to your interior designer or help your electrical contractor.

There are 4 types of lighting, Viz., General, Task, Accent and Informative or Guiding.

General lighting will throw light over an area in a general and uniform way. Typical examples are the ceiling lights.

Task lighting is well positioned; well-directed lighting that provides localized light for specific areas for specific tasks, viz. Reading lamp, table lamp.

Accent lighting is used to reveal texture, colour, form, and pattern of any object you want to focus the attention of the people, e.g. Light on a painting, indoor fountain, pottery, etc.

Informative lighting is used to guide a person gently and safely to some change, e.g. Steps, garage path.

An intelligent use of these in combination with painting and colour washing of walls, ceiling and furniture furnishings lends a pleasing atmosphere.

Ornamental luminaries used must be attractive, strong and functional. Do not go for cheap ones. The polish should last long; the fitting should be able to stand the load, should not collect dust or insects and should be capable of easy dismantling. Out door fitting should be open at the bottom, otherwise it will get filled often with dead bees and insects. Domes with three four screws are difficult to dismantle. Bright lights outdoors attract insects. Lawn lights must be oflow intensity. Avoid white and violet; go in for yellow or green as they attract fewer insects.

Living room must have area lighting in addition to any other type of lighting; never watch TV or PC in the dark. Extreme brightness of the screen against dark background is harmful to the eyes. Don't place lights, which cast reflection on the screen. Reading light should come to you at an angle above your shoulder and should not be bright but soft and with all round glows. Also it should not be used alone but with area lighting.

In dining area a pendant light, rising and falling if you so prefer should be enough. It should not be bright but should help see natural colours of the dishes. Pendant lights are not suitable for bedrooms but wall mountings are preferred.

The switches of at least one area light and task lights should be located at the bed, in case of double bed on both sides. The task light one uses should not disturb another. In children's room the plugs shall be self- locking. Stairs shall have two-way switches and the landings and winders shall be well lighted.

Bathrooms shall have switches, which are located either outside or on the wall opposite the way shutter opens. Task light switches should be located at the place where a task takes place, e.g., plug for shaving. It is wise to have switches of the outer security lights inside the house, so that you can switch them on from within. Control switches to security lights both in the multipurpose hall and master bedroom would help identify visitors at night quickly.

VAASTU-A PERFECT SCIENCE

For more details: www.bangaloreadvocates.com

Vaastu, as many consider, is not a bundle of superstitions, but a comprehensive science towards understanding geography, topography environment, physics, more importantly tapping the nature for happy living. It recommends suitable size, shape and orientation of the structure in relation to the site, soil and surroundings and also personality of the inhabitant.

Everybody agrees that natural elements (Panchabhootas) have direct bearing on the life of every human being. Vaastu aims at bridging the sources of these natural elements.

The human body according to Nadi shastra has seven chakras. They are Mooladhara chakra, Swadhistana chakra, Manipura chakra, Anahat chakra, Vishudha chakra, Ajnachakra, Sahastrara chakra. They are Centers of power and by activating them, enormous power can be generated. They are intimately associated with water, fire, air, earth and sky-the five elements of Vaastu.

Each direction of the plot represents a certain element and it is essential that provision is made to tap the particular energy on that prescribed direction only. The northeast (Eeshanya) is meant for water, Southeast (Agneya) is for fire, Northwest (Vayauvya) is for air and Southwest (Nairuthya) is for earth element and the central portion (Brahmastal) is for the sky.

Let us examine, whether these prescriptions have any scientific value. Vaastu mandates that any water body, well, bore well, sump tanks should be placed in Northeast direction as water will be purified by morning sunrays.

Nobody disputes the efficacy of the rays of the rising Sun. The southeast is prescribed for fire. Solar radiation is very important to human life. The intensity of sunrays is most powerful at southeast. This would help in heating. Positive energy of sunrays is received from east, north, north east, southeast.

Vaastu also recommends keeping more open area in north and east to derive maximum benefits of the early morning sunrays. Vaastu mandates to close the west, south, southwest and place heavy furniture in those directions and those areas to be more elevated. This would block the harmful rays of the evening sun. The water bodies are not recommended in this area, since; the water would absorb the harmful sunrays in the evening. Expose your body to the morning Sun, it will be soothing and invigorating compared to the evening Sun, which would be harsh and irritating. This establishes how realistic Vaastu is.

Another important requirement is proper ventilation, flow of natural light. Fresh air abundant with oxygen improves the health of the inhabitants. Northwest or Vayuvya is a source of abundant air, hence northwest is linked with element of air and Vaastu recommends windows in this directions.

All of us have read that earth is a magnet or acts as a magnet. The magnetic energy flows from North Pole to South Pole.

This magnetic energy affects life on the earth. Everybody is aware that unlike poles attract each other, that is South Pole attracts North Pole and North Pole attracts South Pole. The mind is associated with North Pole. That is why bedrooms are prescribed in the southwest direction, and people are advised to sleep placing their head towards south and legs towards north. So that when opposite poles attract each other the body gets activated. Leaving more vacant space in east, north, north east and closing the south, west and southwest would help in maximum utilization of magnetic energy.

The sky element is linked to Brahmastal, which is central portion of the house. Many would have felt the difference of the comfort felt in old houses and modem houses. In olden days the central space was kept open and structures were built surrounding the open central space. This would keep the entire house cool and ventilated, where as the modem houses, where this principle is ignored, turn out to be stuffy and sultry.
Present the Fire, Water and Earth elements are being well utilized, the other two elements Air and Sky are neglected which is the cause of many problems.
